Essex Young Ringers

The Essex Association of Change Ringers Facebook

Essex Young Ringers' is an informal group made up of any young ringers of all abilities from Essex under the age of 25. Parents and other supporters are encouraged to come along to any events too. We want to get every young ringer to join in so don't worry if you can only ring rounds at the moment — all are welcome. Put the dates in your diary and join in! We have regular monthly practices at different towers.

NEXT EVENT: Sunday 25 June, Mini-outing

2.30pm to 3.15pm – Leyton (E10 5JH) – I have been told there are no parking restrictions on a Sunday. Goldsmith Road (E10 5HA) runs down the east side of the church so it may be possible to park there.

3.45pm to 4.30pm – Wanstead (E11 2SW) – parking by the church and around the green.

5pm to 5.45pm – Great Ilford (IG1 1TX) – There will be a Service on when we visit so please ensure you are quiet when arriving.

The very first South-East England Youth Striking Contest was held on Saturday 2nd April at Christ Church, Epsom Common and was a resounding success. Six teams took part, so there were over 48 youngsters (some teams brought 'reserves') plus assorted parents and hangers-on, all enjoying listening to some very good ringing in the sunshine. Whilst awaiting their turn the teams kept themselves entertained with ball games and handbells. Refreshment were provided in the form of tea, coffee, cold drinks and homemade cakes, followed by a fish 'n chips lunch. After the judging a number of the youngsters, parents and hangers-on went off to ring at St Martin's Epsom and then to Ewell. Congratulations to everyone involved in the organising, particularly David Pearson (whose father is Gerald Pearson from Hatfield Heath) for his hard work in getting this brilliant idea off the ground. It was really encouraging to see and feel the enthusiasm of so many young people enjoying their ringing - and to hear them hoping that this contest will become an annual event. The judges were Phillip Ridley and Alban Forster, results were as follows:

1st Sussex Young Ringers 76%
2nd Kent Young Ringers 70%
3rd Essex Young Eagles 68%
4th Young @ Herts 67%
5th GDG Young Ringers 65%
6th W&P Young Ringers 50%

Well done to the Essex Young Eagles band: Steven, Mollie (Conductor), Sam, Neil, Joel, Courtney, Rachel and Daniel.

From the feedback during the day it looks as though there is enough enthusiasm for this to become a fixture in the ringing calendar with Herts being the first society to offer to host the event next year. I'm sure all the other societies would have been willing to act as hosts as well as they all seemed very keen to take part again next year. Although a lot of fun, bands took the competition very seriously, with W&P pulling half their band from the Isle of Wight and the other half flown in from the Channel Isles, how's that for commitment?

We have two important events already in the diary for 2016:

  • The South East England Striking Competition (hosted by the Guildford DG) at Epsom Common on Saturday 2 April. More details to follow but Kent, Guildford, Hertfordshire, Winchester & Portsmouth, Surrey and Sussex are all expected to enter a team, so it should be a good contest and experience for our ringers.
  • The Ringing World National Youth Contest in central London on Saturday 2 July. Arrangements are not yet finalised but towers open are likely to include the Jubilee bells at Garlickhythe and the ring of ten on Fleet Street. As a day out ringing it should be excellent, so please put the date in the diary now!

The EYR website is where future events could be listed, and where reports of events, achievements by young ringers, photos etc could be posted.

It is a great way to make friends, to ring with others of your own age, and to have a good time.

Ringing World Young Ringers Contest

The Essex Young Eagles gave a very commendable performance in the National Youth Contest at Oxford. With three enforced changes due to the age restriction and a new conductor it was a year of re-grouping and the test ringing on the day was better than in any of their practices! Hopefully we can build on this next year.

Nineteen teams from all over the country took part including, for the first time, a team from Scotland with three teams ringing methods and sixteen teams ringing call changes. The performances were graded C-, C, B, and A. 3 teams were graded C-. Ringing call changes, Essex Young Eagles were graded C along with 3 others. 6 teams were awarded B and 3 grade A. The overall winners were Bedfordshire, for the third year running. They received the Whitechapel Trophy. Full results are here.

Through the course of the day the EYE party in Oxford numbered around 23 and full advantage was taken of the opportunity to ring at 6 towers which were open for general ringing which included the 31cwt 12 at Christ Church. The organisers and helpers (Oxford itself provided over 60 helpers) did an absolutely fantastic job.

The chief judge, David Pipe, described the bells at St Thomas' Church, Oxford, as "easy to ring, but hard to ring well". The judges comments on the EYE test piece were: "A slow piece with some very nice rows". Peal speed 3h12 (one of the slower ones).

Congratulations to Ellanor, Mollie (Conductor), Samuel, Thomas, Francesca, Joe, Rachel, Daniel and Nicholas (Reserve). Essex towers represented were Danbury, North Ockendon, Sandon, Springfield, Willingale and Writtle. Thank you to the parents and other supporters who came to cheer us on and to our team coach Christina Brewster and row counter Andrew Brewster.

Finally thank you to all of you in the Essex Association who have supported us this year - especially those towers who have made their bells available to the Youth team for practices: Writtle, Little Baddow, Stanford le Hope, Fobbing and Basildon. Next year's contest will be held in London on 2nd July.
