Steve Goddard: funeral report

The funeral of Stephen Goddard, who died 23rd August, has taken place at All Saints, Terling on 25th September

More than a hundred people gathered to pay their respects to the well-liked ex-RAF aircrewman and bell ringer. At least 39 of the attendees were bell ringing friends from various parts of the country who, in his honour, rang the bells he learned on as a child. His coffin, topped by flowers and his RAF Flight Sergeant cap, was carried in as the bells were rung by a local band, some of whom knew him as a boy.

There were moving tributes from family and friends that highlighted his love for the RAF, his passion for ringing and his sense of fun. He was clearly a man who was cheerful, humorous and fun to spend time with, optimistic even when faced with adversity. This was followed by a sensitive address from the Reverend Dowling.

The hymns sung were Morning has Broken, Make Me a Channel of Your Peace and Jeruslaem.

The coffin was carried out by pallbearers to ringing from the RAF Guild of Bellringers, of which he had been Master.

Ringing continued whilst family and close friends accompanied the coffin to the crematorium, methods ranged from PB Triples to Bristol and Yorkshire S. Major
