The Essex Association of Change Ringers   President: The Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Chelmsford

Ian Valentine

It is with great sadness to have to share with you all that Ian Valentine died on Wednesday 8 October 2019.

After retirement in 1997, Ian decided to rise to the challenge of becoming a bellringer in 2001, as by then he had had to give up choral singing due to increasing hearing difficulties. He started his ringing career whilst living in Goldhanger, where a new band was started, the bells having been silent for a while.

Ian continued his pursuit of the art of campanology when he, and his wife Jane, moved to Wivenhoe in 2009. In March 2019, at the age of 85 he reluctantly decided to "hang up his rope". He was a very active member of the Wivenhoe team, having arranged several tower outings for us, assisted with tower maintenance, as well as being a regular ringer for both service and practise evenings. We will miss him greatly, not only for his ringing prowess, but also for his participation in our apr├Ęs-ringing drinks after our Wednesday practise night, where a wide range of interesting topics were discussed.

We celebrated his last trip up the tower on 3 March by ringing for the confirmation service and giving Ian a token on our appreciation. A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday 6 November at 1.30pm at St Mary's Wivenhoe
