Central Council of Church Bell Ringers

What is the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers?

The  Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR or the Central Council) is the representative body for all who ring bells in the English tradition with rope and wheel. Founded in 1891, the Council today represents 65 affiliated societies, which cover all parts of the British Isles as well as centres of ringing in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, South Africa and Italy. These societies in turn comprise the members of the local companies of ringers in their areas.

The Object of the Central Council is to advance the practice, heritage and appreciation of bell ringing as an enjoyable mental and physical exercise and unique performing art for the public benefit of both church and community.

The Central Council liaises with strategic partners, including church authorities, heritage bodies and local communities, ensuring the soundscape of bells remains relevant in times of celebration and commemoration. Recent initiatives to increase the number of ringers invited communities to Ring for the King, the coronation of King Charles III, and Ringing Remembers commemorative events marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Strategic Aims

The strategic aims of the Central Council are to:

  • Raise the appreciation and understanding of bellringing and the part it plays in community life;
  • Put in place effective structures for potential new recruits and opportunities for ringers to learn and develop ringing skills
  • Support provision of quality ringing environments and infrastructure

The Central Council is run by volunteers and skills and knowledge are always needed to help move some of these projects forward.  If you think you may be able to help, please contact the EACR Central Council Reps using the contact form below.
