For those considering developing their ringing teaching this year – either of basic bell handling or of foundation skills – we have arranged two Association of Ringing Teachers (ART) courses in Essex.
If you aren’t familiar with ART, do have a look here: https://bellringing.org. This is a great place to discover masses of information about ringing in general, the ART organisation and how to learn or brush up your teaching skills.
Details of the modules will be found here: https://bellringing.org/about-teaching/teaching-modules/
The cost of a day course is £30 and you will also need to either bring your lunch or join the group at a local pub. There is a tower fee to pay of £5 on top of your course fee and lunch costs. (If this is prohibitive for anyone, do consider applying for a course grant which I can help you with.)The MODULE 1 teaching bell handling course is on May 24th at Felsted and will be tutored by Lesley Boyle.
Module 1 entry requirements:
- You need to be aged 14 or over.
- You need to have sufficiently good bell control to be able to demonstrate a good bell handling style to a new ringer, with no handling faults.
- You need to be able to comfortably raise and lower a bell.
- We expect that you should easily be able to pass the Learning the Ropes Level 2 handling assessment.
If you’re uncertain, watch the good handling style video here and compare it with a video of yourself ringing or ask a ringing friend to compare your handling against the watch points.

- You need to have sufficiently good bell control to be able to inspire confidence in others.
- You need to be able to comfortably raise and lower a bell.
- You can ring at least Plain Hunt.
We expect that you will be able to demonstrate a good bell handling style to a new ringer, with no handling faults. You should easily be able to pass the Learning the Ropes Level 2 handling assessment. If you’re uncertain, follow this link to find out more about good handling.

If you haven’t used ART Events before you will need to register and sign in, but the process is quite straightforward.
After the course you do need a mentor (another ART accredited teacher that you can work with) or someone else who will do the course with you and with whom you can co-teach. Please do think about this and talk to your ringing friends who might support you.
Any queries, just contact me.
