Try Your Hand at Bell Ringing: Open Tower Weekend Across Essex This September!

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside your local church tower? Perhaps wanted to hear the heavy bells swing and try your hand at an ancient, fascinating art form that combines teamwork, rhythm, mental agility and light exercise?

This September, as part of our celebrations linked with Heritage Open Days, bell towers across Essex are opening their doors for special “Ring Out for Essex” events to celebrate our rich local history, historic church architecture and centuries-old traditions. Whether you are looking for a new musical hobby, a unique way to keep fit, a connection to local history, or just a chance to meet friendly locals, you are warmly invited to come along, meet our teams, and give bell ringing a pull!

What to Expect

No prior musical experience or physical strength is required, if you can climb the tower steps and lift a light package, you can ring!

When you visit an open tower, you’ll get to:

• See historic bells in action and learn how the mechanical system works.
• Possibly have a go yourself with guidance from an experienced ringer.
• Explore local historic buildings and discover the heritage stories behind the towers.
• Try out a Mobile Belfry / Mini Ring at select locations (marked below)!

Visitor Information

• Cost: Completely FREE as part of local heritage celebrations!
• Clothing: Comfortable, flat shoes and easy-moving clothes (avoid loose scarves or baggy sleeves).
• Who can join: Anyone! No prior musical skill or physical strength is required. Suitable for adults and young people over 8 years old.
• Accessibility: Please be aware that accessing most historic ringing rooms involves climbing spiral stairs. Ground-floor or mobile belfry options are available at selected sites.
